Overcoming Obesity

Lucy's got some splan'n to do

I wish I would have forced myself to sit down and write this blog last Monday when I weighed myself but I just didn't find the time. As many of you know, I traveled for the last 5 weeks for work. I maintained working out however I ate out every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Initially, I really tried to eat healthy, as the weeks passed, I order a bigger steak, added cheese, ate fried foods and asked for extra gravy. I also wasn't sleeping very well which of course, does not help your metabolism.

I made it back to Dallas around midnight on 9/3. I was pretty exhausted because I was living on about 9 hours of sleep for the entire week. When I got home, I vegged out with my son for an hour and then hit the sack. We ran errands all day on Saturday and ate out for lunch and dinner. Sunday, we enjoyed a BBQ at my sisters house, it was great spending time with the family. On my way home, I stopped at the store and got some groceries. I was ready to cook healthy meals and get back on track.

Monday morning, I weighed myself

Oh my goodness, I gained 7 pounds in 5 weeks... this is my first gain since January. I have to get back on track. I was ready, I had a healthy breakfast, had a sensible lunch packed and even a few healthy snacks. I worked until 6:30, by the time I was home, it was pretty late, I had laundry to do so I picked up a pizza. Tuesday started off strong, breakfast, snacks and lunch ready to go. I wasn't ready for the candy bars that were sitting in the office when I got out of the classroom. And before you knew it, I ate three and two bags of chips. What the heck??? I lost it and binged. Wednesday was just as bad, except I was able to reserve and only eat two candy bars. Thursday night was another pizza night and Friday was Red Lobsters. On Saturday it was Olive Garden and Sunday morning it was Denny's.

Things are out of control. What really freaks me out, is that I can feel it in my stomach, it's bloated, I am uncomfortable and feel sluggish. Yet, I keep doing it. I honestly had to ask myself, what are you doing? I was only 3 measly pounds away from losing 65 pounds yet, I am eating like I have nothing to lose.

I am stressed, I am working on getting back into the groove of things but it really freaks me out to see how easy it was to fall back into old habits.

For an even bigger reality check, I weighed myself this evening and I nearly feel over

I have gained 7 pounds since 09/06. Yea, look at the dates on those photo's. What the heck is going on?

I'm gonna tell you, I have been careless, I didn't work out at all last week and I am not counting calories. VACATION is over (not that I was on one)!!! Momma is back and I have a lot to get a handle on.

I'm working on getting back into a routine and balance. I am not going to beat myself up, it is scary that I allowed myself to slip so far into a downward spiral but regardless, I have come a long way this year. I love myself and I will find the balance, after all, I want to be healthy. This is a life long commitment and this is only a small hurdle in the road.

My Goals for September (from this moment forward):
1. Drink 8 glasses of water a day
2. Track everything I eat
3. Exercise 4 days a week

One meal at a time, one day at a time! 2010 is my year and I am going to ROCK it!

  2. I'm right there with ya and its only the 120 nieman marcus cookies i made and can't keep my hands off that are like crack cocaine. Not even eating out to blame it on. tomorrow is a new day and a new week. You can do it, i'll do my best to do it. Hang in there, that weight will melt off once you get on track!

  3. The important thing is that you know you are up and you are worried. If you didnt care it would be a much bigger deal. One minute at a time. TOnight there was a huge back of candy. I popped in a piece of gum to help me not grab a handful. It will get easier once you have been back on plan for a day or two!

  5. We've all been there girl. Just know that it only takes ONE single, perfect day to get back in the groove. One day...do it right, and when your head hits the pillow you'll feel SOOOO much better about yourself. It makes it easier to wake up and do it right the next day...one day at a time and you'll get right back to the healthy habits you were enjoying. You can do it. :)

  6. Ok step 1 - put down the food! Step 2 - remind yourself that its ok, this is a journey and there is no such thing as perfect. All you got was a little reminder that even though you've been doing an amazing job that you're still human and that those old habits that took years and years to develop don't disappear after 6 months or a year of healthy actions. They get easier to control but they're still there. Step 3 - be good (drink your water, exercise and eat well) for a 1 week and you'll see most of that weight gone. I don't put on 9 lbs by having a binge weekend on my birthday...but you can't actually gain weight that fast, you can however retain water from all the salt and fat you're eating. For me all but 1 lb was gone after a week. So don't beat yourself up...congrats you're human.

Also remember how far you've come! Did you really think there wouldn't be a few slip ups along the way? Take it from someone who's had a few of her own ;)

  7. Scary, isn't it? It happens so quickly! I know you are disappointed in yourself, but if you execute your plan, you'll be back to losing weight in no time. You can do it! I think, a few weeks of leaving the junk behind, and the cravings will lessen substantially. Still, your experience is a good lesson for us all. We can't really afford to let our guard dowdn too much, can we? One day, we'll want to maintain our goal weight range, and so this is a good practice run for that. You know better now, what works for you and what doesn't. It is about progress, not perfection. Onward and downward ... don't look back!! You can do this!

  8. You can do it. This is a pivotal point for you. This is the point where in the past for most of us the plan was abandoned. We'd failed. That is faulty thinking. You haven't failed, just had a minor set back. You can't undo what was done, but you can move forward. My experience is that the re-gain falls of rather quickly too. So, don't beat yourself up, just get back on that horse & ride!

  9. Work traveling is so tough on so many levels - not having your regular routines for eating, but also sleeping, working, etc. It's great, though, that you're not getting too down about it. You fall off, you get right back on. Excellent! ♥ Good luck!

  10. I had some trouble breaking the eating out habit. I did Phase 1 of South beach Diet and it really helped break the sugar-fat-carb addiction. It's really hard to follow though, especially the first couple days. I was chewing sugar free gum like a crazy woman. You just need to get back into the habit of eating at home and eating healthy. You'll get there. Just don't give up!

  12. Wow you're doing an AMAZING job! Set-backs are part of the learning process and you're learning as you go. Pat yourself on the back and keep going! I love the transformation in the video show on your blog!

  13. Well look at that. You are human just like the rest of us =0) Kidding of course. Set backs are a way of life. It isn't the set back that is gonna hurt, its how long you fall that matters. You can do this. Pick yourself back up, go back to what you know works. Don't spend money on eating out, get a new shirt or something. Your weight doesn't own or define you. You my friend are in control!

  14. I haven't checked your blog since April. I am very impressed with were your numbers have gone overall. Yes, I feel like I am just gaining back again instead of losing lately, too.
I'll join in on spending money on fun trips/clothing rather than eating out.
I agree with K. Parker, that you are in control. You've recognized the bloating and gaining and you want to do something about it. Now get moving!

  15. Eat lots of fat and protein. Eat and eat and eat some more. Meat, eggs, extra fat. Once you are in ketosis, your hunger and cravings will reduce naturally. Good luck!! :)

  16. I would just like to let you know that you have been one of my greatest inspirations this year. I know you aren't feeling very in control right this second, but YOU ARE IN CONTROL and you CAN keep going and change your life. I really hope you will. I just started a blog here and I'm following you here now (and on SP). I have lost almost 30 pounds this year.. and gained 15, and lost 10 and gained 12.. and lost 4.. and gained 6.. and lost 9. I know that's a lot of math, but the point is, I'm still 20 pounds lighter today than I was on January 1 (I started working on this at the same time you did). I'm not gonna lie, 20 lbs in 9 months is not exactly what I had in mind (I need to lose 100 total).. but it's progress and I am NOT giving up. And I really don't think you will either. You've got SO much support.. I mean you've pretty much started a cult ;) We friggin love you Stephanie and if you quit I'm going to bawl my eyeballs out. So just don't, okay? Please. You're awesome.
