IMPORTANT - Must be prepared at all times!

When I woke up this morning I decided I needed to go work out. Before leaving for the gym I had a Strawberry Shake (1 cup frozen sliced strawberries, 1/2 cup skim milk and 1 packet of stevia, blended until smooth - only 71 calories). After enjoying my shake, I headed to Curves. I had a GREAT workout in very good company. I love meeting new people and hearing their story. After the gym, I ran home to pick up the kids and go do errands. I wasn't really hungry so I didn't even think about grabbing a lunch to go. We hit the streets and begin the weekend hustle. Before you know it, it's 5:00, I haven't had a bite to eat and I am getting a headache. I take a few Advil's and am trying to get home. I can't risk going to a Fast Food joint, I might cave. I finally get home and cook dinner, all is well. I made spaghetti with 100% whole grain pasta. I went to eat, and had a few bites and then decided to eat a salad with a grilled chicken breast in the fridge.

I certainly didn't mean to go so long without eating, I don't want to confuse my body or put it in starvation mode. It made me realized how prepared you really need to always be. Of course, I am not planning on installing a fridge in my car or anything but I really do need to educate myself to learn about healthy choices that can be found at fast food places or restaurants. I've heard those stories where some salads have more calories than a burger and fries so I just want to make sure I am making good choices.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for fast food or restaurants?

  1. I have a backpack for all my kids stuff while we do our weekend / evening things. (coloring book, toys and so on). I put a few 'grown up' snacks in there that can stay for a while.

I am a 312 pound woman and have enjoyed reading your blogs! I can relate!

  2. I have thought about dropping by McD's after a workout because Im fanished and getting a grilled chicken snack wrap without any of the sauces(ranch, honey mustard, or bbq)to cut out some calories. Also Taco Bell has a fresca menu that offeres lower fat items. A chicken soft taco and order of plain rice is about 300 calories. HOWEVER, 1 taco and some rice is just gonna piss me off and make me hungrier. LOl- I havent been eating healthier long enough to trick my brain. I cant wait until all the unhealthy foods are out of my house (letting the kids and hubby finish them up) so that the temptation isnt killing me, but I have yet to give in since Monday! I am proud of us! Like you said, we didnt end up over 300lbs over night, so we cant expect it to disappear overnight either. I know I have spend many a night crying because Im just so frustrated about my weight and being, not just fat, but enormous, so I can expect a few nights when I want to cry cuz Im craving Dunkin Donuts and brownies....

  3. I think Sonic has some yummy salad choices. Just make sure it's grilled and they have the dressing on the side, so you can add a little bit, and not the whole packet. (It does have cheese & an onion ring, but you could ask them to leave the onion ring off, and possibly the cheese!). Starbucks has good salads that are well rounded (cheeses, fruits on a bed of lettuce with a vingerette) but you have to be careful, they're right under the pastries! I'm not sure about the calorie content; perhaps you could snack until you're a bit full and tell yourself you'll enjoy the rest later?

    You're doing GREAT though!

  4. Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming. Salad under pastry... not sure if I could do it and honestly just the smell of starbucks, heck the name itself has my mouth watering for a Caramel Frapaccino ... and thats 430 calories! Awww man! Well, I certainly can't become a hermit crab and live indoors the rest of my life, I am eventually going to have to face the fact that I will eat away from home. Like Bethy079 said, one taco and a small portion of rice would irritate the crap out of me, I would want more more more. And that is certainly a problem, I never have been able to master portion control. Hopefully time will help with that.

Again, all of your support and feedback, I really appreciate it and hope it keeps coming! One meal at a time!

  5. McDonalds has some pretty decent salads. Also they have the fruit & yogurt parfaits and the fruit & walnut salad (apples w/ grapes & yogurt for dipping). All of those are pretty decent calorie wise. If you choose a salad just choose the grilled chicken over the breaded.

Also a lot of fast food places have their nutritional information on their websites. Find your favorite places and see what will work for you during the day.

    Good luck!

Oh and I found your blog through a post you did on Sparkpeople.

  7. Yes! Nuts...pine nuts, almonds and pumkin nuts ...just make sure you're mindful of the serving. Plus, low-carb protein bars (under 200 cal). You can easily pack these to go or even get them at a drug store. It'll keep you fueled and satisfied, and don't starve yourself! Also, add a scoop of protein powder to your shakes...just that fruit is not giving you the nutritional benefits that you need. You should check out 344pounds.com. He didn't do any crazy diet. Just counted calories and succeeded.
